Chapter 1

My Pregnant Wife Hid Her Bruised Body Until I Realized My Own Mother Was the Monster.

Jake Carter pulled the dark-blue blanket back only a few inches.

Then the room stopped.

Megan recoiled against the pillow, one hand clutching her beige maternity top, the other moving protectively over her seven-month-pregnant belly.

“Jake, please… don’t pull it back.”

Her voice broke.

Jake froze.

The suspicion that had brought him into the bedroom vanished instantly.

Across Megan’s thighs and knees were deep bruises she had been hiding beneath blankets, long dresses, and silence.

Jake’s hand released the fabric.

At the doorway, his mother, Margaret Carter, stood in a deep-red evening dress, gold jewelry shining under the warm bedroom light.

She lifted her chin.

“She’s hiding the truth from you.”

Jake turned slowly toward her.

That was when he noticed it.

Margaret was not shocked.

Not horrified.

Not asking what happened.

She was staring at the bruises like she had already seen them.

Jake gently placed the blanket back over Megan’s legs and knelt beside the bed, keeping his hands visible.

“Megan… who did this?”

Megan’s breathing became uneven.

Her eyes moved toward Margaret.

Margaret took one step back.

Tears ran down Megan’s cheeks as she raised one trembling finger toward the doorway.

“Your mother. Every time you left for work.”

Jake’s face went completely still.

Margaret’s confidence cracked.

For once, she had no prepared answer.

Jake rose and stepped between his mother and the bed, shielding Megan with his entire body.

His voice was low.

Controlled.

Final.

“Don’t come near my wife again.”

Behind him, Megan reached for his hand.

Jake did not look away from Margaret.
