Chapter 10

No arrest happened inside the apartment.

No police entered the bedroom.

No hospital scene followed.

No final confession was completed.

No family separation was settled that night.

No medical outcome for the baby was revealed.

The confrontation ended with Jake Carter standing between his pregnant wife and his mother.

Megan sat on the bed beneath the dark-blue blanket, tear-streaked and trembling, one hand over her seven-month-pregnant belly.

The bruises were no longer hidden.

The secret was no longer only hers to carry.

Margaret stood in the hallway just beyond the warm bedroom light, her red dress sharp against the darkness, her confidence broken by the one thing she had not expected.

Jake believed his wife.

He faced his mother directly.

“Don’t come near my wife again.”

His voice was low.

Controlled.

Unmistakable.

Margaret’s mouth opened, but no defense came.

Behind Jake, Megan’s fingers found his hand.

He reached back and held her without turning away from the doorway.

That small gesture said everything he could not safely say yet.

I’m here.

I see it now.

You are not alone with her anymore.

Margaret took another step back.

The bedroom remained tense.

Unresolved.

Alive with everything that would come next.

But the balance had changed.

For weeks, Megan had hidden her bruises beneath blankets because shame and fear convinced her silence was safer.

Now Jake had seen the truth with his own eyes.

And the monster was no longer hiding behind the word mother.
