Chapter 5

Jake covered Megan gently.
That was the first thing that saved her from breaking completely.
He did not grab her.
Did not demand she move.
Did not touch the bruises.
He placed the blanket back over her legs as if dignity mattered as much as truth.
Then he knelt beside the bed.
“Megan… who did this?”
Megan looked at him.
Really looked.
The Jake in front of her was not the suspicious husband from five minutes earlier.
He was the man she had married.
The man who whispered to their unborn child.
The man who checked the locks twice at night.
The man who would never knowingly leave her with danger.
But knowing that and speaking against his mother were two different things.
Her throat tightened.
Margaret shifted at the doorway.
“Careful,” she said.
Just one word.
Jake turned his head.
“What did you say?”
Margaret lifted her chin.
“I said she should be careful. She’s very emotional.”
Megan’s hands tightened over the blanket.
There it was again.
The cage.
Emotional.
Dramatic.
Sensitive.
Unstable.
All the words Margaret used to make the truth sound like illness.
Jake looked back at Megan.
His voice softened.
“You don’t have to protect anyone.”
Megan’s tears spilled faster.
“I was protecting you.”
That sentence hit him harder than the bruises.
He understood then.
Megan had not stayed silent because she did not trust him at all.
May you like
She stayed silent because Margaret had made loving him feel like a reason to endure pain.
