Chapter 2

Megan had been hiding the bruises for weeks.
Not because she wanted to protect Margaret.
Because she was afraid Jake would not believe her.
That fear ashamed her more than the injuries.
Jake loved her.
She knew that.
He came home exhausted from duty and still kissed her forehead before taking off his uniform. He talked to the baby through her stomach. He set alarms for her vitamins. He noticed when she skipped meals and sat beside her until she ate.
But Margaret had spent years building a different version of herself in Jake’s mind.
Sacrificing mother.
Lonely widow.
Woman who raised him alone.
Woman who “only wanted what was best.”
Margaret was careful.
She never attacked Megan in front of Jake.
In front of him, she brought soup, folded baby clothes, adjusted curtains, and said things like, “You rest, sweetheart.”
After he left for work, her voice changed.
“You trapped him with that baby.”
“You’re making him soft.”
“You’ll ruin his career.”
At first, Megan answered back.
Then Margaret began using her hands.
Not in ways that left easy explanations.
Not on her face.
Not where Jake would notice immediately.
A hard grip on the thigh.
A shove against the bedframe.
A knee pressed down while Megan tried to stand.
Small acts disguised as accidents.
Then worse.
Megan told herself she would speak.
Tomorrow.
After the next appointment.
After Jake’s shift.
After she found the right words.
But every time Jake came home, Margaret was already there with dinner in the oven and a sad smile on her face.
“She’s emotional today,” Margaret would say.
And Megan would watch Jake’s brow tighten with concern, not suspicion.
So Megan pulled the blanket higher.
May you like
And waited until silence became heavier than fear.
