Chapter 9

Margaret retreated into the hallway, but she did not leave the apartment.
Not yet.
Jake knew that mattered.
A doorframe was not enough.
A warning was not enough.
A confrontation was not a plan.
But the prompt of the moment did not reach final outcomes.
No police arrived.
No arrest happened.
No hospital treatment began.
No full confession came from Margaret’s mouth.
Only the first truth stood in the bedroom.
Jake remained between the door and the bed.
Megan sat propped against the pillows, one hand on her belly, the other holding Jake’s hand like a lifeline.
The baby moved.
Small.
Sudden.
Megan gasped.
Jake turned instantly.
“What?”
“She moved,” Megan whispered.
For one second, his face broke.
Not from weakness.
From the weight of what almost remained hidden.
He knelt again, this time beside the bed but still angled toward the doorway.
“Did she hurt the baby?”
Megan’s eyes filled with fresh fear.
“I don’t know.”
Jake closed his eyes.
Then opened them with controlled focus.
He wanted answers.
But first, Megan needed safety.
He looked toward the hallway where Margaret’s shadow still lingered.
“She doesn’t get to decide what happens next.”
Megan swallowed.
“She’ll tell everyone I lied.”
Jake gently squeezed her hand.
“Then I’ll tell everyone I saw the bruises.”
Megan looked at him as if she was trying to believe that the world had changed.
Maybe it had.
May you like
Maybe it had only begun.
