Chapter 3

Jake did not mean to pull the blanket back.
Not at first.
He came into the bedroom because Margaret said Megan had been “acting strange.”
“She won’t get out of bed,” Margaret told him in the hallway. “She keeps saying her legs hurt, but she refuses to let me help.”
Jake’s first emotion was worry.
Then confusion.
Megan had been distant lately.
Flinching when doors opened.
Avoiding his mother’s eyes.
Sleeping with the blanket tucked around her body even when the room was warm.
He thought pregnancy pain was worse than she admitted.
He thought she was embarrassed.
He thought maybe she was hiding a complication because she did not want him to panic.
So he sat on the edge of the bed and said, “Meg, let me see.”
Her face changed.
Real fear.
Not discomfort.
Not shyness.
Fear.
“Jake, please… don’t pull it back.”
The words stopped him for a second.
Then Margaret spoke from the doorway.
“She has been dramatic all day.”
Something in Jake tightened.
Not because of Megan.
Because of the word dramatic.
His mother used it too easily.
Too often.
He looked from Megan’s face to Margaret’s.
Margaret crossed her arms.
“She’s hiding the truth from you.”
So Jake pulled the blanket only enough to see what truth meant.
The bruises were there.
Dark.
Extensive.
Real.
Megan began to cry without sound.
Jake’s body went cold.
He had walked into the room expecting a pregnancy problem.
Instead, he found evidence.
And his mother’s first reaction was not shock.

It was control.
