Chapter 12 - Felix asks if his mother is going to prison

Felix came to see me after school.
Adrian was under sentencing restrictions.
Genevieve allowed the visit through lawyers because Felix kept asking questions she could not answer.
He sat in my library.
No bodyguards inside.
Primrose colored on the rug.
Then he asked:
“Is Mom going to jail?”
“I don’t know.”
“Dad is?”
“Probably for some time.”
“How much?”
“I don’t know yet.”
That was true.
Then:
“Did Mom make fake papers?”
I looked toward Primrose.
She was listening.
Children always listen.
I answered carefully.
“The court decided the paper Mom used wasn’t real.”
“Did she know?”
I paused.
“Yes.”
Felix looked down.
Then:
“Was she trying to make me steal Primrose’s stuff?”
“No.”
Primrose looked up.
“She said I get leftovers.”
Felix flushed.
“I didn’t say that.”
“I know.”
Then I told him:
“Your mother wanted more control in the family. She tried to use a document that should never have been used.”
“Because I’m a boy?”
“Partly.”
Felix looked offended.
“That’s dumb.”
Primrose pointed a crayon at him.
“I said that too.”
For once, family consensus.
Then Felix asked:
“Do I still inherit anything?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“You’re ten.”
“That’s not an answer.”
I almost laughed.
“You have a trust. Independent adults manage it. You will learn more as you get older.”
“Can Mom take it?”
“No.”
“Can you?”
“No.”
He relaxed.
Then Primrose:
“Can he buy a horse?”
“No.”
May you like
Felix groaned.
The first successful trust administration lesson.
