No dramatic reunification program.
Genevieve had never been Primrose’s primary caregiver.
Just:
One structured family conversation.
Primrose sat beside me.
Felix sat beside Genevieve because he wanted to.
Genevieve said:
“I smashed your birthday cake.”
Primrose nodded.
“I said Felix was more of an heir than you because he’s a boy.”
“Yes.”
“I was wrong.”
“Because Daddy won?”
Genevieve flinched.
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because being a boy does not make Felix more important than you.”
Primrose looked at Felix.
“He doesn’t even want the company.”
Felix:
“I want a horse.”
Everyone laughed except Genevieve.
Then she did.
Primrose asked:
“Did you make fake papers?”
Genevieve looked at me.
I let her answer.
“I used papers I knew were not real the way I said they were.”
“Why?”
“To make your dad give me more control.”
“Why?”
Genevieve paused.
“Because I thought control meant safety.”
That was probably the first true answer.
Then Primrose:
“Did it?”
“No.”
Then:
“Can you come to my next birthday?”
Genevieve’s eyes filled.
She looked at me.
I said:
“That’s next year.”
Primrose groaned.
