Chapter 10 - the return to meridian tower

Adrian’s face remained on the screen for only five seconds.
It was enough.
Gabriela saw recognition in his eyes. His mouth moved slightly, though no sound came through. His right hand rested on the arm of a wheelchair, while his left remained curled against his chest.
Then Simon ended the transmission.
Finnley demanded they contact federal authorities.
Gabriela refused.
“Margaret controlled a Senate committee. Halcyon has people inside every agency.”
“You cannot enter Meridian Tower alone.”
“I will not.”
She looked at Hayden.
The child appeared exhausted but alert.
“You are staying here with Naomi.”
Hayden shook his head immediately. “Dad needs me.”
“Your father needs me to keep you safe.”
“He said follow the music.”
Gabriela’s throat tightened.
Adrian had built clues around Hayden because he trusted his son’s memory. But Gabriela would not continue allowing adults to use him as a weapon.
Naomi arrived at Falcon Ridge by helicopter with a loyal security unit. She took custody of Hayden and moved him to a protected safe house whose location was known only to Gabriela.
Finnley insisted on accompanying Gabriela to Manhattan.
The return flight was silent.
Meridian Tower rose above the city’s financial district, sixty stories of black glass and steel. Gabriela had purchased it through a shell company five years earlier. No sign displayed her name. She preferred control without attention.
Simon had always claimed to admire that.
Now he had locked her out of her own building.
Thousands of employees had been ordered home. Armed contractors occupied the lobby and executive floors. Simon announced to the board that Gabriela had suffered a psychological breakdown after her son’s kidnapping.
It was the same strategy Finnley once used against her.
Discredit the woman.
Seize the company.
Control the story.
Gabriela arrived through an underground parking entrance connected to a neighboring property she also owned. Naomi’s team disabled several internal cameras, allowing Gabriela and Finnley to reach the service elevator.
On the forty-eighth floor, they found Malcolm.
He was tied inside a records room, bruised but alive.
“You took the evidence case,” Gabriela said after cutting him free.
“To keep it from Simon.”
“Where is it?”
“He has it now.”
Malcolm explained that Simon had worked with Adrian years earlier to expose Halcyon. But after learning how much money moved through the network, Simon changed sides.
“He helped you establish Meridian because he needed a clean financial system capable of absorbing Halcyon assets.”
Gabriela understood.
Her success had not merely threatened the conspiracy.
It had been designed to serve it.
“How long did Adrian know?”
“Long enough to hide ownership beyond Simon’s reach.”
“Where?”
Malcolm looked toward Finnley.
“In Hayden’s trust.”
The trust did not simply contain Hayes shares. It secretly controlled Meridian’s parent company.
Hayden was the legal owner of both empires.
That was why everyone wanted him.
A gunshot echoed from the floor above.
They moved quickly toward the executive suite.
Inside the boardroom, Simon stood beside Adrian’s wheelchair. Celia and Kendall were also present.
Kendall was no longer tied.
She stood willingly beside Simon.
Gabriela felt a familiar betrayal settle into place.
“You staged your kidnapping,” she said.
Kendall looked ashamed but did not deny it.
“I needed access to Adrian.”
“You helped take Hayden.”
“I did not know they would hurt him.”
“That excuse has become your favorite.”
Celia held a syringe near Adrian’s IV line.
Simon smiled.
“Welcome home, Gabriela.”
She looked at Adrian.
His eyes filled with tears.
“Release him.”
“He is not a prisoner,” Simon said. “He is a partner who became inconvenient.”
Adrian struggled to speak.
Only one word emerged.
“Run.”
The boardroom doors locked.
Metal shutters covered the windows.
Simon placed the stolen evidence case on the table and opened it.
The flash drive, ledger, and photographs remained inside.
“You built something extraordinary,” he told Gabriela. “Meridian can become the most powerful private financial network in the world. Sign control to me, and your family lives.”
“And if I refuse?”
Celia pressed the syringe closer to Adrian’s IV.
Finnley stepped forward.
“Take my shares.”
Simon laughed. “Your shares are nearly worthless.”
Gabriela noticed Adrian moving two fingers against the wheelchair armrest.
Tap. Pause. Tap-tap.
A code.
She watched carefully.
Adrian had taught her Morse code during a sailing trip years earlier.
He repeated the message.
FLOOR.
Gabriela glanced beneath the boardroom table.
A thin cable ran from Adrian’s wheelchair to a concealed pressure switch.
Simon had not brought Adrian into the room as a hostage alone.
Adrian was connected to something.
He tapped again.
BOMB.
Gabriela’s pulse stopped.
Simon followed her gaze and smiled.
“If my heart monitor stops transmitting, the building’s foundation charges detonate.”
“You wired thousands of people into a death trap.”
“The building is empty.”
“Not everyone.”
Simon’s expression changed slightly.
He had forgotten the maintenance crews, security contractors, and employees still trapped on lower floors.
Gabriela stepped toward the table.
“You do not want Meridian. You want the trust authorization.”
“I want Hayden to enter the code.”
“He is not here.”
Simon lifted his phone.
A live security feed showed Hayden inside the supposedly secret safe house.
Naomi lay unconscious on the floor.
Someone had found them.
A masked figure dragged Hayden toward the door.
Simon looked at Gabriela.
May you like
“He will be here soon.”
👉 Gabriela had walked into Meridian Tower to rescue Adrian, but Simon had already found Hayden—and the building itself had become a bomb waiting for one heartbeat to stop.
