Chapter 12 - the man Adrian created

The tower entered full lockdown.
Naomi evacuated every remaining employee through the underground garage while security teams searched floor by floor.
Simon disabled elevators and internal communications from the central systems hub. The explosive controls moved with him through the building, making it impossible to isolate his location.
Gabriela remained beside Adrian only long enough to hear the truth.
“What did you mean when you said you created Simon?”
Adrian struggled for breath.
Years earlier, Halcyon recruited young financial criminals and gave them new identities. Simon Cross was not Simon’s real name. Adrian had erased his criminal record and placed him inside the Hayes organization as a protected informant.
“He was supposed to help you expose them,” Gabriela said.
Adrian nodded.
Instead, Simon discovered that Halcyon’s network was worth billions. He began replacing loyal members with people who answered only to him.
Adrian realized the betrayal too late.
“Why did you keep me in the dark?”
“To keep you clean.”
“You used my company.”
“I gave you tools.”
“You made Hayden a target.”
Adrian’s face tightened with pain.
“I thought… they would never know.”
Gabriela pulled her hand away.
“That is what every coward says after a child gets hurt.”
She left him with doctors and joined Naomi, Malcolm, Finnley, and Hayden in the command center.
Hayden should have been taken from the building, but the underground exits had sealed. Simon controlled every external door.
He appeared on the command-center screens.
“Gabriela, bring Hayden to the sixty-first floor.”
“There is no sixty-first floor.”
“There is now.”
Meridian Tower had sixty visible levels, but Adrian’s architectural files revealed a concealed chamber above the mechanical roof. The room contained Meridian’s offline ownership server.
The legal authority controlling the entire empire could be transferred from there.
Simon wanted Hayden’s biometric access.
“You have ten minutes,” Simon said. “After that, I detonate one foundation charge every five minutes.”
The screen showed the first charge armed beneath the east support column.
Gabriela could not risk the surrounding buildings.
She agreed.
Naomi developed a plan to follow through a maintenance shaft, but Simon warned that any extra person entering the hidden floor would trigger detonation.
Hayden looked up at Gabriela.
“I can do it.”
“No.”
“Dad made the codes for me.”
“You are six years old.”
“I know.”
The simplicity of his answer broke her heart.
He was not pretending to be brave.
He was terrified and trying anyway.
Gabriela knelt.
“You do exactly what I say. You do not touch anything unless I tell you.”
He nodded.
They climbed the emergency stairs to the roof.
Snow whipped across the open platform. Beneath a maintenance structure, Gabriela found a scanner marked 314.
Hayden placed his hand on it.
A concealed elevator opened.
They entered alone.
The sixty-first floor was circular, lined with glass data cabinets and old Hayes ledgers. Simon stood at the center holding the detonation tablet.
The mechanic guarded the door.
Kendall was tied to a chair beside them.
Gabriela stopped.
“You escaped custody too?”
Kendall looked frightened. “Simon took me.”
“Why?”
Simon answered.
“Because she knows where the final Halcyon archive is stored.”
Kendall shook her head.
“I only know the password phrase.”
Simon placed a gun against her temple.
Gabriela stepped forward.
“Let her go.”
“You still protect people who hate you.”
“I protect Hayden from watching another person die.”
Simon motioned toward the central console.
Hayden approached it.
A blue scanner illuminated his face and hands.
LEGAL BENEFICIARY CONFIRMED.
The screen displayed three ownership structures:
HAYES HOSPITALITY.
MERIDIAN HOLDINGS.
HALCYON CONSORTIUM.
Gabriela stared at the third name.
Hayden legally controlled Halcyon too.
Adrian had transferred the criminal network’s shell companies into the trust, intending to expose and dismantle them when Hayden reached adulthood.
Simon smiled.
“With one authorization, the boy gives me everything.”
“He will never do that.”
“He does not need to understand.”
The console asked for a spoken phrase.
Simon turned toward Kendall.
She began crying.
“I am sorry.”
“What is the phrase?” he demanded.
Kendall looked at Hayden.
Then she shouted, “The dog has stopped barking!”
The lights turned red.
Instead of initiating the transfer, the console sealed every door.
A recording of Adrian appeared.
“Emergency dissolution protocol activated.”
Simon’s face changed.
Kendall laughed through her tears.
“You never knew the real password.”
Adrian’s recording continued.
“All Halcyon accounts will be transferred to federal victim-compensation trusts in sixty seconds.”
Simon raised the detonation tablet.
Gabriela moved in front of Hayden.
The mechanic aimed his gun at her.
Before he fired, a shot came from behind the glass cabinets.
The mechanic collapsed.
Celia stepped from the shadows holding a pistol.
She had escaped custody too.
But she was not aiming at Gabriela.
She aimed at Simon.
“You promised me control,” Celia said.
Simon smiled. “You believed me?”
Celia fired.
The bullet struck the detonation tablet, sending it across the floor.
Simon lunged for Hayden.
Gabriela slammed into him.
They crashed against the console as the dissolution timer reached ten seconds.
Hayden crawled toward the damaged tablet.
One explosive charge showed ACTIVE.
The timer reached three.
Hayden pressed a red symbol.
The screen went dark.
For one second, nothing happened.

Then the entire tower shook.
👉 Hayden stopped the transfer, but an explosion still tore through Meridian Tower—and no one knew which part of the building had just collapsed.
