Chapter 14 - the forgotten son

Finnley regained consciousness after surgery.
Gabriela waited until doctors confirmed he could speak before showing him the security footage.
The limping figure appeared for only four seconds, but Finnley recognized him instantly.
“Julian.”
The name came out like a confession.
Finnley had fathered Julian during an affair before Adrian was born. The boy’s mother worked as an accountant for the earliest Halcyon companies.
When Julian was eight, his mother threatened to expose the Hayes network.
She died in a house fire.
Finnley claimed he did not order it, but he allowed everyone to believe Julian died with her.
In reality, Silas Hayes took the child and raised him inside the criminal organization.
“Julian became Halcyon’s first true heir,” Finnley said.
“What happened when Adrian was born?” Gabriela asked.
“My father replaced Julian with Adrian publicly. Julian never forgave us.”
“Did Adrian know?”
“He discovered the truth as a teenager.”
Adrian, Finnley explained, joined Halcyon partly to find Julian and bring him back. Instead, the brothers became rivals.
Julian believed power was the only protection.
Adrian eventually believed exposure was the only escape.
“Why did Julian shoot Simon?” Gabriela asked.
“Simon stole Halcyon from him.”
“And why take the ledger?”
Finnley closed his eyes.
“Because the ledger contains the location of the original reserve.”
Money was not the only thing Halcyon had hidden.
For decades, the organization collected blackmail materials on world leaders, corporate executives, judges, and intelligence officials. The archive was reportedly stored in a secure location known as the Black House.
Whoever controlled it could rebuild Halcyon even after losing the money.
One page had been torn from Adrian’s ledger during the struggle.
That page contained the route to the Black House.
Gabriela returned to Adrian’s room.
He was stronger, though still unable to walk. She sat opposite him, not beside him.
“You knew Julian was alive.”
“Yes.”
“You knew he might target Hayden.”
“I thought he was imprisoned overseas.”
“You thought many things.”
Adrian accepted the accusation.
“I wanted to come home.”
“Then why didn’t you?”
“Malcolm moved me between clinics. Every time I improved, Celia’s people found us. Eventually, Malcolm disappeared, and I woke up at Falcon Ridge.”
“Did you create the cognitive conditioning program used on Hayden?”
Adrian’s eyes filled with horror.
“No.”
“But you created the code system.”
“For adults. For operatives who consented.”
“They used it on our child.”
“I know.”
Gabriela stood.
“You do not get to ask for forgiveness yet.”
“I know.”
“You do not get to return to our lives and pretend love erases what you built.”
“I know.”
His voice broke.
Gabriela looked away.
She still loved him.
That was the cruelest part.
Before leaving, Adrian gave her a phrase Julian once used.
“The forgotten son inherits the fire.”
It might unlock the torn ledger page if they recovered it.
Federal teams searched airports, train stations, and border crossings. No trace of Julian appeared.
Naomi found something more troubling.
During the Meridian explosion, someone accessed Hayden’s school records and altered his emergency-contact list.
A new guardian had been added.
Julian Hayes.
The authorization used Gabriela’s biometric signature.
Julian possessed the same copied credentials Celia used.
He could potentially access Hayden’s doctors, school, apartment, and trust accounts.
Gabriela moved Hayden to a private estate outside the city. Naomi installed new biometric systems that did not depend on compromised Meridian technology.
Kendall chose to cooperate with prosecutors. She surrendered her financial records and identified several Halcyon intermediaries.
Celia offered information in exchange for immunity, but prosecutors refused.
Margaret Vale denied everything publicly until investigators released photographs from the bloodline vault.
The Hayes name became a national scandal.
Finnley resigned from every remaining board.
Adrian prepared to testify against Halcyon and himself.
For several days, nothing happened.
Then Hayden woke Gabriela shortly after midnight.
“Someone is playing Dad’s song.”
The lullaby drifted from outside the estate.
Gabriela grabbed a firearm from the bedside safe and moved toward the window.
A small music box sat on the snow-covered lawn.
Security cameras showed no one placing it there.
Naomi’s team surrounded the object.
Inside was the missing ledger page.
Written across it in fresh ink were the words:
THE BLACK HOUSE IS NOT A PLACE.
Adrian examined the page through secure video.
His face changed.
“It is a person,” he said.
“Who?”
Before he could answer, every light in the estate went out.
The backup generators failed.
Gabriela heard glass breaking downstairs.
Naomi shouted through the radio that the perimeter had been breached.
Hayden clutched Gabriela’s hand.
From the dark hallway came the slow sound of a man limping toward them.
A voice called softly.
“Adrian always was terrible at protecting his family.”
May you like
Julian had entered the house.
👉 Julian had bypassed every security system and reached Hayden’s bedroom—but the secret of the Black House suggested someone even more powerful was guiding him.
