Chapter 4 - the inheritance trap

Kendall stared at the photograph in Gabriela’s hand.
For once, she had no insult prepared.
Finnley took one step toward his daughter. “Explain this.”
Kendall’s fear sharpened into anger.
“You do not get to question me.”
“The photograph was in your purse.”
“It was planted.”
“By whom?” Gabriela asked. “The same invisible enemy who kidnapped my son?”
Kendall looked away.
Gabriela wanted to drag the truth out of her, but the monitor still showed Hayden trapped inside a moving car. His small shoulders shook beneath the hood.
Nothing mattered more than getting him back.
Malcolm photographed the address and sent it to the police command team upstairs. Officers were already tracing traffic cameras around Hayden’s school and the restaurant.
The kidnapper’s message changed.
TWENTY MINUTES.
A timer appeared beneath it.
19:59.
Finnley stepped closer to the screen. “They will not wait.”
“Who are they?” Gabriela demanded again.
Finnley walked toward the wall of charts Adrian had created. He touched a series of shipping manifests connected to Hayes Hospitality properties in New York, Boston, and Miami.
“My father built the company during a period when restaurants were useful for moving money.”
Gabriela felt Malcolm tense beside her.
Finnley continued reluctantly.
“Over time, legitimate business replaced most of it. But certain partnerships remained. Adrian discovered that company warehouses were being used to conceal illegal pharmaceutical shipments.”
“Whose shipments?”
“A private network called the Halcyon Circle.”
Kendall closed her eyes.
Gabriela looked at her. “You knew.”
“I knew enough to stay quiet.”
“You allowed them near my child.”
“I never told them to take him.”
“But you met their mechanic near his school.”
Kendall’s voice cracked. “He contacted me. He said Adrian had left something with Hayden.”
Gabriela’s heart stopped.
“What?”
“A key, a code, a memory card—I do not know.”
Hayden had never mentioned receiving anything from his father. He had been only three when Adrian disappeared. His memories came in fragments: the smell of cedar in Adrian’s office, a lullaby Adrian sang badly, the silver airplane charm he used to carry.
Gabriela suddenly remembered the charm.
Hayden wore it on a chain until the clasp broke several months earlier. She had placed it in a jewelry box in their apartment.
Could Adrian have hidden something inside it?
The timer continued.
17:42.
Malcolm opened the sealed case and removed Adrian’s handwritten ledger. The pages contained coded entries and lists of dates. Several names were represented only by initials.
One set appeared repeatedly.
K.H.
Kendall Hayes.
Gabriela turned the ledger toward her.
“What did you do?”
Kendall’s face collapsed.
“I introduced Adrian to one of them.”
Finnley cursed.
“I did not know what they were at first,” Kendall said. “They funded hotels and restaurants. They paid for expansion. Adrian started asking questions, and suddenly everyone became afraid.”
“Did you tell them he was investigating?”
“I told them he was becoming suspicious.”
Gabriela’s hands tightened around the book.
“You betrayed your brother.”
“He would have destroyed all of us.”
“He was trying to stop criminals.”
“He was going to expose the company. The stock would have collapsed. Thousands of employees would have lost everything.”
“So you helped sabotage his plane?”
“No.”
The denial came too quickly.
Finnley seized Kendall’s arm. “Tell the truth.”
She tore free. “You knew more than I did.”
Gabriela turned toward him.
Finnley’s silence answered before he spoke.
“I knew Adrian was under surveillance.”
“And you did nothing?”
“I tried to make him stop.”
“You threatened him.”
“I warned him.”
Malcolm removed a small recorder from the case.
“Adrian anticipated that distinction.”
He pressed play.
Adrian’s voice filled the underground office.
“If anything happens to me, my father will claim he tried to protect me. Do not believe him. Finnley does not protect people. He protects the Hayes name.”
Finnley’s face twisted with pain.
The recording continued.
“He has agreed to transfer my voting shares if I disappear. Kendall arranged the meeting. But neither of them understands what Halcyon really wants.”
The audio broke into static.
Then Adrian said one final sentence.
“They want Hayden.”
Gabriela could barely breathe.
Why would a criminal network want a three-year-old child?
The timer reached fifteen minutes.
A new message appeared.
BRING THE BOY’S AIRPLANE.
Gabriela understood instantly.
The silver charm.
She called the security team guarding her apartment.
No one answered.
She called again.
A police dispatcher picked up using one guard’s phone.
“Mrs. Hayes, officers arrived at your residence three minutes ago. The front door was forced open.”
Gabriela closed her eyes.
“Was anything taken?”
“We are checking now.”
She already knew the answer.
The airplane charm was gone.
On the monitor, the vehicle carrying Hayden slowed. The camera angle shifted, revealing a passing street sign through the rear window.
Malcolm froze the image.
They were heading toward the East River.
Finnley recognized the route.
“There is an abandoned Hayes warehouse near the old ferry terminal.”
Gabriela ran for the elevator.
Malcolm followed, carrying the ledger and flash drive. Finnley moved behind them, but Gabriela stopped when she realized Kendall had not followed.
Kendall stood alone in Adrian’s hidden office, staring at the monitor.
Her hand rested on the desk beside a small red switch.
“What does that control?” Gabriela asked.
Kendall looked at her with tears in her eyes.
“I am sorry.”
Then she pressed it.

The vault door began closing between them.
👉 Kendall had trapped herself inside Adrian’s office—but Gabriela could not tell whether she had chosen to destroy the evidence or finally protect Hayden.
