Chapter 13 - after the explosion

The blast threw Gabriela across the hidden floor.
Glass shattered around her. Data cabinets tilted. Smoke poured through the ventilation system while emergency lights flashed crimson.
Her ears rang.
She lifted her head and searched for Hayden.
He lay several feet away, curled beneath the central console. Kendall had thrown herself over him before the explosion.
Gabriela crawled toward them.
“Hayden!”
He opened his eyes.
“I’m okay.”
Kendall groaned and rolled aside. Blood ran from a cut along her shoulder, but she remained conscious.
The explosion had destroyed a section of the eastern foundation. Meridian Tower tilted slightly before emergency stabilizers activated.
Naomi’s voice came through Gabriela’s earpiece.
“East garage collapsed. The primary columns are holding, but you need to evacuate immediately.”
The hidden-floor doors remained sealed under the dissolution protocol.
Simon had vanished.
Celia stood near the damaged window, still holding her pistol.
“Where is he?” Gabriela demanded.
Celia pointed toward an open service shaft.
“He went down.”
The Halcyon account transfer completed.
Billions of dollars moved automatically into protected funds for trafficking victims, patients harmed by illegal medical testing, and families destroyed by financial crimes.
Simon had lost the empire he wanted.
That made him more dangerous.
Kendall revealed another access path through the ceiling. She had learned about it from Adrian years earlier, when he began constructing the hidden archive.
They climbed into the mechanical level above the roof.
A rescue helicopter hovered nearby, but high winds prevented an immediate landing.
Naomi reached them from an exterior maintenance stairwell. She took Hayden and Kendall toward the evacuation point.
Gabriela remained.
“Simon is still inside.”
“The building is unstable,” Naomi warned.
“He has the evidence case.”
“The financial transfer already happened.”
“The case contains names. Without it, half of Halcyon escapes.”
Finnley appeared on the stairwell below, breathing heavily.
“I saw him heading toward Adrian’s clinic.”
Gabriela ran.
She found the fifty-second floor partially flooded by broken sprinkler pipes. Medical staff had evacuated most patients, but Adrian’s room was empty.
His wheelchair lay overturned.
A trail of blood led toward the west corridor.
Gabriela followed it into the surgical wing.
Simon stood beside Adrian, holding a gun against his neck.
Adrian could barely stand, but Simon had forced him upright against an operating table.
The evidence case lay open nearby.
“Put the weapon down,” Gabriela said.
Simon smiled.
“You came without security.”
“I came for my husband.”
“Which version? The loving father or the Halcyon architect?”
Adrian’s eyes met hers.
He looked broken.
Simon opened the handwritten ledger.
“Adrian recruited judges, bankers, doctors, and politicians. He designed the code system. He taught Halcyon how to disappear money.”
“He also tried to destroy it.”
“After he became frightened.”
Adrian forced out a whisper.
“After Hayden was born.”
Simon laughed. “Fatherhood made him moral.”
Gabriela moved closer.
“It made him understand what he had done.”
“That does not erase the bodies.”
“No.”
Adrian flinched at her answer.
Gabriela did not excuse him.
Love could survive truth, but only if truth came first.
“Give me the case,” Simon ordered.
“It is already beside you.”
“The trust key.”
“I do not have it.”
“Hayden does.”
“You will never touch him again.”
Simon pressed the gun harder against Adrian.
“Then he dies.”
Finnley entered behind Gabriela.
“Take me instead.”
Simon rolled his eyes. “Why does everyone in this family believe sacrifice makes them noble?”
“Because some of us learned too late.”
Finnley stepped forward.
Simon fired.
The bullet struck Finnley in the chest.
Gabriela screamed.
Adrian used the distraction to knock Simon’s arm away. They fell against the operating table. Gabriela grabbed the evidence case and struck Simon across the face.
The gun slid beneath a cabinet.
Simon reached for a surgical scalpel.
Before he could rise, Celia appeared in the doorway and fired twice.
Simon collapsed.
Silence followed.
Celia lowered the weapon.
“You killed him,” Gabriela said.
“He would have exposed me.”
Naomi and officers entered seconds later and arrested her.
Finnley was rushed into surgery. The bullet had missed his heart but damaged a lung.
Adrian was stabilized again.
By sunrise, Meridian Tower remained standing.
Kendall sat beside Hayden in the medical ward. She gave him the poodle’s collar and apologized.
“I treated you terribly because I was angry at your father,” she said. “That was not your fault.”
Hayden looked at her.
“Are you going to be nice now?”
Kendall began crying.
“I am going to try.”
The evidence case survived.
Malcolm delivered it to federal prosecutors outside Margaret Vale’s influence. Arrests began across several states.
For the first time, Gabriela believed the nightmare might end.
Then a forensic examiner called.
The two bullets removed from Simon’s body did not match Celia’s gun.
Someone else had fired from the surgical corridor.
Simon had been shot before Celia pulled the trigger.
Security footage showed a shadow leaving through the rear exit.
The figure walked with a distinctive limp.
Adrian watched the footage from his hospital bed.
His face turned pale.
“I know him.”
“Who?”
Adrian looked toward Hayden.
“My brother.”
Gabriela stared at him.
Adrian had always been Finnley’s only son.
May you like
At least, that was what the Hayes family had claimed.
👉 A hidden Hayes brother had killed Simon and escaped with part of the ledger—and even Finnley had never admitted that this man existed.
