Chapter 7 - the attorney’s betrayal

Margaret ordered her men to seize Hayden.

Gabriela moved first.

She grabbed the antique brass lamp from the console and swung it into the mechanic’s arm. His gun fired into the ceiling. One rescue officer tackled him while the other exchanged gunfire with the guards above.

Finnley pulled Hayden behind a row of steel shelves.

Margaret ran toward a side chamber.

Gabriela followed.

The senator reached a control panel and slammed her palm against an emergency release. A hidden passage opened behind the wall.

Before she could escape, Gabriela caught the back of her red coat and dragged her to the floor.

Margaret struck her across the jaw.

Gabriela answered with a harder blow.

“You took my child.”

“I kept him alive.”

“You kidnapped him.”

“Because he is more valuable than you understand.”

Margaret reached for a small pistol strapped beneath her coat, but Gabriela trapped her wrist. They struggled across the floor until Finnley kicked the weapon away.

The remaining guards surrendered when tactical officers breached the ventilation corridor.

Hayden ran into Gabriela’s arms.

She held him so tightly that he gasped.

“I knew you’d come,” he whispered.

“I will always come.”

As officers restrained Margaret, the senator looked toward Finnley.

“You still have not told her.”

Gabriela turned.

“Told me what?”

Finnley’s face was gray.

Margaret smiled despite the handcuffs.

“Ask him who authorized Malcolm to remove Adrian from the plane.”

Gabriela felt the room tilt.

“Adrian was removed?”

Margaret said nothing more.

The vault doors reopened after Hayden placed his hand on the scanner again. Gabriela, Hayden, Finnley, and the officers returned to the upper warehouse.

Malcolm was gone.

So was the metal evidence case.

Two police officers lay unconscious near the entrance. Their weapons and vehicle had been stolen.

A statewide alert was issued immediately.

Gabriela called Bellavere.

The vault beneath the restaurant had reopened, but Kendall had vanished. The documents she gathered were gone, and a bloodstain marked the desk.

No body had been found.

Gabriela now had two missing suspects, one stolen evidence case, and a warning from her supposedly dead husband telling her not to trust either Malcolm or Finnley.

She brought Hayden to a secure medical suite owned by Meridian Holdings. Doctors found bruising on his wrists but no serious injuries.

He refused to let go of her hand.

After he fell asleep, Gabriela confronted Finnley in the adjoining room.

“Start talking.”

Finnley poured water but did not drink it.

“The plane sabotage was real. Adrian discovered it before takeoff.”

“Then why did he board?”

“He did not.”

Margaret’s claim was true.

On the morning of the disappearance, Malcolm received an anonymous warning that the aircraft’s fuel system had been compromised. He removed Adrian through a maintenance exit minutes before the plane departed.

A body double remained on board.

The plane crashed over the Atlantic.

No recoverable remains were found.

Gabriela struggled to process the words.

“Adrian survived?”

“For a time.”

“You knew?”

“I knew he did not die on the plane.”

Her hand struck Finnley before she realized she had moved.

He accepted the blow.

“You let me bury an empty coffin.”

“Adrian demanded secrecy.”

“You let Hayden grieve his father.”

“He believed Halcyon would kill both of you if they knew he survived.”

“Where did Malcolm take him?”

“I do not know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

Finnley removed his wristwatch.

Beneath it, an old scar crossed his skin.

“Two days after the crash, I received a video of Adrian. He was alive, but injured. Malcolm said he had moved him to a safe medical facility.”

“Did you speak to him?”

“Once.”

“What did he say?”

Finnley looked at Hayden through the glass.

“He said the safest thing I could do was make the world believe I hated you.”

Gabriela remembered every insult. Every newspaper leak. Every time Finnley refused to help her. Every cruel word about Hayden.

“You were protecting us?”

“At first.”

“And later?”

Finnley lowered his eyes.

“Later, I became angry. Adrian trusted Malcolm more than me. He transferred shares to Hayden. He gave you control. I convinced myself he had abandoned the family.”

“So you tried to steal the trust.”

“Yes.”

The honesty was almost worse than another lie.

A nurse entered with a padded envelope found inside Hayden’s coat during the examination.

It had been sewn into the lining.

Gabriela opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Adrian lying in a hospital bed. A newspaper beside him showed a date from only six weeks earlier.

Adrian had been alive recently.

Behind the photograph, someone had written:

MALCOLM IS NOT THE TRAITOR.

Gabriela turned the image over again.

Beneath the sentence was a second message.

FINNLEY KNOWS WHERE ADRIAN IS.

Finnley stared at the photograph.

“I have never seen that room.”

But Gabriela noticed something reflected in the window behind Adrian’s bed.

A gold crest shaped like a falcon.

The same crest appeared on Finnley’s wristwatch.

👉 Finnley claimed he did not know where Adrian was, yet the photograph placed Gabriela’s missing husband inside a facility connected directly to the Hayes patriarch.
