Chapter 13 - Vanessa’s first apology
The first apology arrived through Dad around month two.
I never showed Caleb.
It said:
“I’m sorry I reacted physically after Caleb destroyed something meaningful to me.”
No.
The object still got first position.
Second:
“I’m sorry I scared him.”
Better.
Still:
“I was under enormous stress and Rachel escalated the situation by kicking me.”
There it was.
Returned.
Third came after diversion counseling.
“I slapped Caleb.”
Good start.
“I did it because I was furious about the vase and because I believed Rachel had never taught him to respect other people’s belongings.”
I continued.
“That belief did not give me authority to hit him.”
Good.
“I also said cruel things about Rachel’s finances.”
Good.
Then:
“I am sorry.”
No request for immediate contact.
I kept the letter.

An apology can be correct and still arrive before trust is ready.
