Chapter 6 - Vanessa’s charge
Vanessa was charged with misdemeanor assault involving Caleb.
No felony.
No jail raid.
No dramatic arrest at work.
She received a summons.
Her attorney initially argued:
The slap was parental-style correction performed in the presence of the parent after property destruction.
That argument went nowhere because Vanessa was not Caleb’s parent and I had not authorized corporal punishment.
Then:
Reflexive response.
Then:
Minimal contact.
The video absence gave room to argue force.
Witnesses supported a deliberate slap.
Dad:
“She struck him across the face.”
Mom:
“Yes.”
Aunt Sharon:
“Yes.”
Even Vanessa eventually stopped denying it.
The prosecutor offered diversion conditioned on:
No contact with Caleb unless approved.
Anger-management counseling.
Community service.
Restitution for the urgent-care bill.
No new offenses.
A written acknowledgment that she had no authority to physically discipline him.
Vanessa accepted.
That happened around month three.
I heard through Dad.
I did not celebrate.
I wanted her to understand.
