Chapter 8 - My parents chose silence
After the party, Mom begged me not to cut Vanessa off permanently.
I said:
“I’m not discussing permanently.”
“Then what are you doing?”
“No contact with Caleb.”
“For how long?”
“I don’t know.”
Mom hated uncertainty.
Families prefer a bad fixed answer to an open boundary.
Dad was different.
He said:
“Take the time you need.”
But he also kept the letter.
I confronted him.
“Why didn’t you give it back to Caleb?”
Dad looked embarrassed.
“He asked me to mail it.”
“You could have told me.”
“He asked me not to.”
“He was six.”
“I know.”
“So why honor his secrecy over telling his mother?”
Dad sighed.
“I thought the letter might make things worse.”
“There it is.”
“What?”
“You all decide what I can handle.”
He looked at me.
“That’s fair.”
I was not prepared for immediate agreement.
He continued:
“I should have told you.”
“Yes.”
“I didn’t send it because Vanessa’s lawyer had told her not to communicate with you or Caleb during diversion.”
That part was reasonable.
“So why give it to her three weeks ago?”
“Her no-contact restriction had been modified after she finished the core part of the program. I asked her lawyer first.”
Of course Dad had somehow turned a child’s crayon letter into a compliance question.
Still:
“Why not give it back to Caleb?”
Dad looked down.
“Because I wanted her to read it.”
There.
His choice.
“What did you think it would do?”
“Make her feel ashamed.”
“Did it?”
“Yes.”
“Then congratulations.”
He winced.
I softened.
“Dad, Caleb’s feelings aren’t tools to fix Vanessa.”
“I know.”
That became Dad’s mistake.
Not malicious.
He wanted reconciliation.
He used the letter as moral leverage without understanding what it meant to Caleb.
Once we named it, he apologized to Caleb.
Specific.
“I should have given your letter back instead of deciding what to do with it.”
Caleb said:
“Okay.”
May you like
Then asked him to help build a Lego spaceship.
Adult guilt rarely gets the ceremony it expects.
