Chapter 11 - Karen’s explanation
Karen’s lawyer eventually allowed a recorded interview after negotiations.
She did not deny the shove.
She said:
“I pushed Emily away from me.”
Why?
“She was screaming.”
Was Emily striking her?
No.
Threatening?
No.
Holding anything?
No.
Karen said:
“I wanted her to stop making a scene.”
Did she know the railing was behind me?
“Yes.”
Did she intend me to fall?
“No.”
That distinction became central.
I believed she did not intend a thirteen-foot fall.
I also believed pushing anyone hard beside a railing was violently reckless.
Both.
Then investigators asked about the miscarriage lie.
Karen cried.
She said Daniel had been:
“destroying Emily.”
How?
“He was taking her to Boston.”
The detective reportedly paused.
“That is not destroying someone.”
Karen said:
“You don’t understand my family.”
Maybe.
Then she admitted she cropped the old messages to remove the date.
Not alter words.
Not fabricate text.
Crop.
She told Daniel they came from the miscarriage day.
Then invented the hospital-phone confession.
Why?
“I needed him to stop defending her.”
Against whom?
Karen hesitated.
“Against us.”
There.
That was the confession beneath the confession.
Family unity meant Emily agreeing with Karen.
