Chapter 24 - The civil case
I filed a civil claim against Karen.
Not Olivia.
Not the restaurant.
Karen.
Intentional tort.
Medical costs.
Lost income.
Rehabilitation expenses.
Pain and suffering.
Her homeowner umbrella insurer disputed coverage for intentional conduct.
Expected.
We eventually reached a settlement involving personal assets and limited coverage for disputed negligence components without pretending insurance happily pays for deliberate assaults.
The amount was meaningful.
Not millions.
Enough to cover:
Uninsured treatment.
Therapy.
Lost wages.
Future orthopedic monitoring.
Legal fees.
A moderate compensatory component.
I did not become rich from falling.
I was already financially stable.
The settlement did not feel like victory.
Money rarely knows what to do with humiliation.
I used part of it to fund an independent scholarship at the maternal-loss support organization whose group I had attended after June.
No naming it:
