Chapter 15 - The divorce papers
Karen’s lie did not invalidate my divorce automatically.
We had signed.
Divided accounts.
Daniel kept his retirement and bought out my share of our condo.
I kept savings and investment assets under the settlement.
No children.
No alimony.
No fraud on the court tied directly to asset division.
A painful reason for divorce does not make the legal dissolution evaporate.
Daniel asked:
“Could we undo it?”
Rebecca almost laughed when I told her.
“Legally, you could remarry.”
“That is not what he meant.”
“I know.”
Emotionally, the answer was more complicated.
The lie explained why our marriage collapsed.
It did not erase Daniel’s behavior during collapse.
He had called me selfish.
Accused me of choosing work over June.
Slept in the guest room for two months.
Refused couples counseling twice.
Filed first.
Karen handed him a lie.
