Chapter 25 - Karen comes home

Karen was released after serving the custodial portion of her sentence.
Supervision followed.
She moved into a small condominium.
Not because she had lost everything.
She sold the large family house because maintaining it alone no longer made sense and legal costs had reduced her savings.
Olivia helped her move.
I did not.
For six months after release, no contact.
Then Karen asked through counsel:
Would Emily agree to one mediated meeting?
I said no.
Three months later she asked again.
I said yes.
Not because time creates entitlement.
Because I wanted to test whether her letters existed in person.
The mediator’s office had no balcony.
I noticed.
Dark humor is patient.
Karen sat across from me.
Older.
Hair shorter.
No black lace.
No performance.
She said:
“I’m sorry.”
I waited.
Then:
“I lied to your husband because I wanted to control where your life went.”
Good.
“I used Olivia’s jealousy.”
Good.
“I turned your miscarriage into evidence against you because I knew grief would make Daniel easier to convince.”
Painful.
Then:
“I shoved you because you stopped obeying me in public.”
There.
No:
I lost control.
No:
You were screaming.
No:
I didn’t mean the fall.
Specific.
I asked:
“Do you expect a relationship?”
“No.”
“Do you want one?”
“Yes.”
“Different question.”
“I know.”
We ended after forty minutes.
No hug.
May you like
Outside, I realized my hands were not shaking.
That was enough.
