Chapter 8 - Olivia’s role in the lie
Olivia did not create Karen’s screenshots.
She did something simpler.
She corroborated.
When Daniel called her during our marital collapse, he asked:
“Did Emily tell your mom she waited?”
Olivia answered:
“Yes.”
False.
Later she said:
“I assumed Mom had told me correctly.”
That defense lasted about three weeks.
Then investigators obtained text messages between Olivia and Karen.
Karen:
Daniel keeps asking if Emily really waited.
Olivia:
What do you want me to tell him?
Karen:
That she told us both. He needs to understand what she’s like when work takes over.
Olivia:
Fine.
There.
No criminal conspiracy to cause the miscarriage.
No forged medical file.
Two women agreeing to lie to a grieving husband.
Why?
That became more complicated.
Olivia resented my marriage.
Karen feared losing me to Boston.
And both had built a story where Daniel was:
“turning Emily against the family.”
The same language controlling families always seem to invent independently.
My moving away became betrayal.
My marriage became the mechanism.
Then the miscarriage made me vulnerable enough to separate from him.
They pushed.
