Chapter 13 - Daniel and Boston

Daniel never moved to Boston.

After our marriage collapsed, he declined the transfer.

That shocked me when I learned.

“Why?”

We were sitting in the rehabilitation gym.

I was learning stairs again.

He had brought coffee.

He visited only when invited.

He answered:

“Because Boston was ours.”

“That’s sentimental.”

“It was true.”

“You still blamed me.”

“Yes.”

“You still divorced me.”

“Yes.”

“So?”

He looked down.

“I didn’t know who I was after everything.”

Fair.

Then:

“I also think some part of me knew the story didn’t fit.”

That annoyed me.

“Then why didn’t you investigate?”

“Because if Karen was lying, I had destroyed my marriage for nothing.”

I stared.

He corrected himself.

“Not for nothing. I destroyed it because I chose not to trust you.”

Better.

“Finding proof would have forced me to admit that sooner.”

There.

Cowardice again.

Not villainy.

Avoidance.

People do enormous damage trying not to learn they have already done damage.
