Chapter 1

My Son-in-Law Abandoned His Daughters at Their Mother’s Funeral—Then They Revealed What She Had Hidden From Him.

Arthur Cole waited until the dirt was still fresh on Rose’s grave before he abandoned his daughters.

White lilies trembled in the gray Savannah wind.

April, only six, clutched her mother’s framed portrait against her chest.

Rachel cried quietly into Charles Bennett’s black funeral coat.

Lucy stood pressed against her grandfather, pale but strangely composed for a twelve-year-old who had just buried her mother.

Near the black SUV, Arthur pulled against an officer’s restraining hand and pointed at the girls with open contempt.

“They’re going into foster care Monday.”

The mourners stopped moving.

Several women covered their mouths.

Charles slowly lifted his head.

His silver hair was neat, his beard trimmed, his eyes wet with grief.

But when he looked at Arthur, that grief became something harder.

“No. They’re coming home with me.”

Arthur laughed like the children were furniture being argued over.

Then Lucy moved.

She glanced at her father, reached beneath her black coat, and pressed a thick sealed envelope into Charles’s hand. The corner of a small dark notebook showed behind it.

“Grandpa… Mom said he must never find this.”

Charles looked down.

His face changed.

Arthur saw the envelope.

His indifference vanished.

He jerked free and took two desperate steps forward.

“Give me that envelope!”

Lucy and Rachel ducked behind Charles.

April held the portrait tighter.

Charles slid the envelope inside his coat and stepped between Arthur and the girls.

His voice was low.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

“Take one more step toward them.”

Arthur froze.
