Chapter 10

No arrest was completed at Rose Bennett’s grave.

No courtroom proceeding began.

No foster-care placement was decided.

No future wedding appeared beyond the black SUV.

No final contents of Rose’s evidence were revealed under the overcast Savannah sky.

The confrontation ended with Charles Bennett standing between Arthur Cole and the three girls Rose had trusted him to protect.

Lucy stood behind him, pale but steady, her hands still trembling after giving up the envelope.

Rachel cried softly against his coat.

April clutched her mother’s framed portrait so tightly that her knuckles whitened.

The white lilies moved in the wind.

The fresh grave remained silent.

The mourners watched without knowing what Rose had hidden, but knowing enough from Arthur’s terror.

Arthur stood several feet away, stopped by Charles’s warning and the officer now positioned closer to his side.

His expensive black suit looked suddenly wrong beside the grave.

Too clean.

Too prepared.

Too eager to leave.

Charles kept one hand over the inside of his coat where the sealed envelope and notebook rested.

He had not opened them.

He had not read them.

He had not revealed them.

But he had seen Arthur’s face when Lucy said Rose wanted them hidden.

That was enough for now.

Charles looked down at the girls and drew them closer.

“No one is taking you today,” he said softly.

Arthur heard it.

So did the mourners.

So did Rose, in whatever way love remains after the body is gone.

Arthur had arrived at the cemetery believing he could bury his wife, abandon his daughters, and drive away with whatever truth remained.

Instead, his oldest daughter handed that truth to her grandfather.

And Charles Bennett became the wall he would have to get through first.
