Chapter 3

Lucy had not cried when Arthur made the foster-care announcement.

That worried Charles more than if she had collapsed.

A child should not become calm at her mother’s grave.

A child should not stand with a secret under her coat, waiting for the right moment like a witness.

But Rose had chosen Lucy for a reason.

Three days before she died, Rose sat on Lucy’s bed while Rachel and April slept in the next room.

She held the envelope in both hands.

“Sweetheart, I need you to listen carefully.”

Lucy looked frightened.

“Is Dad mad again?”

Rose closed her eyes for one second.

Then opened them.

“If anything happens to me, and your father tries to separate you girls from Grandpa Charles, give this to Grandpa. Not your father. Not anyone else.”

“What is it?”

“Something that tells the truth.”

Lucy began to cry.

Rose pulled her close.

“I know this is too much. I know. But you are not alone. Grandpa will know what to do.”

Lucy hid the envelope inside the lining of her black funeral coat the morning of the burial.

She added the small notebook because Rachel had been too afraid to carry it.

April carried the portrait because Rose had told her, “Hold Mommy close.”

None of them fully understood.

Not until Arthur stood near the SUV and said they were going into foster care Monday.

Then Lucy understood enough.

Her father was not grieving.

He was clearing space.

So she waited until Charles said they were coming home with him.

Then she gave him what Rose had trusted her to protect.
