Chapter 9

Charles did not know what was inside the envelope.

He did not know what Rose had written in the notebook.

He did not know whether it contained insurance records, bank papers, names, dates, recordings, or something worse.

And he did not need to know beside the grave.

That was the point.

The evidence was not for the crowd.

It was not for gossip.

It was not for Arthur to snatch, tear, explain, or burn inside the SUV.

It was for safe hands.

Later.

Properly.

Sealed.

Arthur’s panic made everyone want immediate answers.

Charles refused that temptation.

He had buried his daughter that morning.

He would not turn her last protection into a spectacle.

The officer spoke again.

“Mr. Cole, step back from the family.”

Arthur’s mouth twisted.

“My family?”

Lucy answered before Charles could.

“We’re Grandpa’s family too.”

Charles felt that sentence in his chest.

Arthur looked at her with anger so sharp Charles moved another half step forward.

“Take one more step toward them,” Charles repeated quietly.

This time, Arthur did not move.

His face had changed from anger to fear.

Not fear of Charles’s age.

Not fear of the officer.

Fear of the sealed envelope hidden inside Charles’s coat.

Fear of Rose’s final preparation.
