Chapter 5

When Lucy placed the envelope in Charles’s hand, it felt heavier than paper.
It felt like Rose’s fear.
The envelope was cream-colored, thick, sealed across the back with careful tape. No writing showed on the outside. No name. No instructions. Nothing readable.
Behind it, Charles saw the corner of the dark notebook.
Old.
Worn.
Rose’s.
He recognized it immediately.
She had carried that notebook in her purse for years.
Grocery lists.
School reminders.
Birthday ideas.
At least, that was what Charles had assumed.
Now he wondered how many times she had sat beside him at Sunday dinner with the truth in her bag and fear in her throat.
“Grandpa… Mom said he must never find this,” Lucy whispered.
The world narrowed.
Charles looked at Arthur.
Arthur’s eyes were fixed on the envelope.
Not the girls.
Not Rose’s grave.
The envelope.
That was the confirmation Charles needed.
A man innocent of its contents would ask what it was.
Arthur demanded it back before anyone opened it.
“Give me that envelope!”
The officer’s hand slipped as Arthur jerked forward.
Mourners stepped aside.
Rachel cried out.
Lucy grabbed April’s shoulder and pulled her behind Charles.
Charles slid the envelope and notebook inside his coat with one smooth motion.
Then he stepped forward.
Not fast.
Not dramatic.
Certain.
“Take one more step toward them.”
Arthur stopped because Charles’s voice carried something he had never heard before.
Not grief.
May you like
Command.
