Chapter 4

Arthur Cole believed public settings protected him.

He had built his life around appearances.

At restaurants, he spoke softly.

At charity events, he praised Rose.

At school functions, he lifted April onto his shoulders and smiled when mothers called him devoted.

In private, Rose’s face changed around him.

Charles held Rachel closer.

“I raised their mother.”

Arthur smiled thinly.

“And look how that turned out.”

A murmur went through the mourners.

Charles almost moved then.

Almost.

But April’s small hand gripped his coat.

That brought him back.

Rose had not left him a moment for violence.

She had left him a responsibility.

Protect the girls.

Protect the evidence.

Let Arthur reveal himself.

And Arthur, arrogant enough to think cruelty sounded practical, had already begun.
