Chapter 3

The living room looked too perfect for fear.
White walls.
White sofa.
Glossy marble floor.
Rain-covered city windows reflecting warm lamps.
A room designed for wealth, not truth.
Hannah stood near the window in a cream blazer and dark-green dress, her lip bruised, her eyes exhausted in a way Taylor recognized immediately.
Zoe stood behind the sofa, crying quietly, holding a folder almost as wide as her small chest.
Gavin stood between them and the laptop.
His face was red.
His voice was sharp.
“I told you not to touch my office files.”
Hannah looked at Taylor as if she could not believe her mother had arrived fast enough.
Gavin turned.
For half a second, he smiled.
The smile said he still believed he controlled the room.
“Taylor,” he said. “This is a private family matter.”
Taylor glanced at Hannah’s lip.
“No.”
Gavin’s smile disappeared.
He stepped toward Hannah, hand lifting as if he meant to snatch the folder from Zoe next.
Taylor moved before he reached them.
Not wild.
Not angry.
Precise.
Her foot struck low, controlled, enough to force him backward without serious injury.
The water glass tipped.
Droplets scattered.
Gavin hit the chair edge and stared at her like the room had changed languages.
It had.
Taylor raised one steady hand.
“Take one more step toward her.”
Gavin’s mouth opened.
For once, no insult came quickly.
He had expected tears.
Begging.
Confusion.

He had not expected a retired officer standing between him and the daughter he thought he had isolated.
