Chapter 5

Gavin tried to reclaim the room through ownership.

“This is my house. Stay out of it.”

Taylor did not blink.

Men like Gavin loved possessive words.

My house.

My wife.

My daughter.

My money.

Taylor had spent decades watching dangerous people reveal themselves by what they called theirs.

She scanned the living room quickly.

Doorways.

Glass fragments.

Water on marble.

Laptop position.

Hannah’s distance from the exit.

Zoe’s line of safety behind the sofa.

Poppy’s position near the front door.

Gavin saw her eyes move and became angrier.

“What are you looking at?”

Taylor answered, “The room.”

“The room?”

“Yes.”

Poppy closed the front door softly.

The sound made Gavin turn.

“Who the hell are you?”

Poppy held up his smartphone but did not point it like a weapon.

“Poppy Grant.”

“That means nothing to me.”

“It will.”

Taylor took the folder from Zoe with both hands, lowering herself slightly so the child did not feel like she was surrendering it to another adult who might misuse it.

“Thank you, sweetheart.”

Zoe wiped her face.

“Is Mom in trouble?”

Taylor looked at her.

“No.”

Gavin scoffed.

“She should be. She broke into my private files.”

Taylor opened the folder.

Her eyes moved over the sheets.

No readable numbers were needed.

The structure told enough.

Layered transfers.

Repeated codes.

Contractor names that looked too clean.

Taylor’s face cooled.

“No,” she said. “He left a trail.”
