Chapter 7

Hannah found her courage in small pieces.
First, she stepped out from behind the sofa.
Then she pulled Zoe closer instead of letting the child hide alone.
Then she looked at Gavin without lowering her eyes.
“You told me the account was safe.”
Gavin’s face hardened.
“This is not the time.”
“It was Zoe’s college fund.”
“It was our money.”
“It had her name on it.”
“She is eight.”
Hannah’s voice shook, but it did not break.
“And you counted on that.”
Taylor did not interrupt.
This was Hannah’s ground to reclaim.
Gavin pointed at the laptop.
“You have no idea what you’re looking at.”
Hannah swallowed.
“No. But Mom does.”
That sentence changed the room again.
For years, Gavin had treated Taylor like decorative family history.
An aging mother with pearls and veteran stories.
A woman to be humored.
A woman from before his world.
Now Hannah placed authority back where it belonged.
Gavin turned toward Taylor.
“What exactly do you think you know?”
Taylor’s face remained calm.
“I know repeated transfers rarely hide well when the same man gets arrogant.”
His eyes sharpened.
“You’re accusing me?”
“I’m reading you.”
Poppy’s phone chimed softly.
He looked down.
The encrypted file finished unlocking.
He raised his eyes.
“Taylor, the hidden folder just opened.”
Gavin’s expression changed so fast that Zoe stopped crying.
