Chapter 8

Gavin moved for the laptop.
Too fast.
Too desperate.
Taylor was faster.
She stepped into his path and caught his wrist before his hand reached the keyboard.
Not crushing.
Not twisting.
Controlled.
Firm.
The way someone stops damage without creating an excuse.
Gavin stared at her hand on his wrist.
“Let go.”
“No.”
“You have no idea who you’re dealing with.”
Taylor’s eyes met his.
“Thirty years in the Army taught me plenty about men who panic when records open.”
Gavin’s face flickered.
For the first time, he understood.
Not all of it.
Enough.
This was not a mother-in-law meddling in a marital argument.
This was a retired officer recognizing financial concealment, coercive control, and evidence preservation in the same room.
Poppy stepped closer to the laptop, phone angled away so nothing readable showed.
Hannah moved Zoe farther behind the sofa.
Gavin pulled once.
Taylor held.
“Take your hand off me,” he hissed.
“Step back from the evidence.”
“It’s my laptop.”
“It’s connected to my granddaughter’s folder now.”
His eyes flashed toward Zoe.
Taylor saw that too.
Her voice lowered.
“Do not look at her like that.”
Hannah’s breath caught.
Gavin realized he had lost something larger than access to a device.
He had lost the room.
May you like
No one in it was moving around his anger anymore.
