Chapter 9

The rain thickened against the windows.

For a moment, the living room reflected all of them.

Gavin, wet blazer darkened by spilled water, wrist held away from the laptop.

Taylor, burgundy suit steady beneath warm light.

Hannah, bruised and trembling but standing.

Zoe, small and frightened, clutching the edge of her mother’s dress.

Poppy, calm at the doorway, holding the phone that had opened something Gavin never wanted found.

No police entered.

No arrest happened.

No courtroom waited in the next room.

No final recovery appeared on the screen.

But evidence had shifted from hidden to protected.

That was enough to terrify Gavin.

“What do you want?” he asked.

Taylor released his wrist only after he stepped back.

“Distance from my daughter.”

He laughed once, thin and ugly.

“You don’t get to decide that.”

Hannah spoke before Taylor could.

“I do.”

Gavin turned.

Her voice was quiet but clear.

“You don’t come near Zoe.”

His mouth tightened.

“She is my daughter.”

Hannah held Zoe closer.

“Then you should have protected her future instead of draining it.”

Poppy looked at Taylor.

“The folder is mirrored.”

Gavin’s face went pale.

Taylor nodded once.

That meant the evidence was no longer only on the laptop.

No final outcome.

No full file reveal.

But Gavin knew enough.
