Chapter 4

Hannah had been hiding the finances longer than the bruises.

That was what made her feel ashamed.

She thought she should have seen it earlier.

The missing statements.

The changed passwords.

The way Gavin started collecting the mail himself.

The way Zoe’s college account stopped appearing on the family dashboard.

When Hannah asked, Gavin said, “I consolidated things.”

When she asked again, he said, “You don’t understand investment timing.”

When she printed records, he laughed.

When she called the bank, he took her phone for “security reasons.”

Then Zoe came into the kitchen one evening holding a folder.

“Mom,” she whispered, “Dad said this is grown-up money. But it has my name.”

Hannah opened it after Zoe went to bed.

The papers were confusing.

Transfers.

Contractor identifiers.

Accounts she did not recognize.

Repeated movement from Zoe’s college fund into places Gavin had never mentioned.

Hannah did not understand every line.

But she understood enough to feel sick.

When Gavin found the folder missing from his drawer, his mask dropped.

That night, Hannah sent the code.

Rain in the pantry.

Then she waited near the window with Zoe behind her and the folder hidden beneath the sofa pillow.

By the time Taylor arrived, Gavin had already found it.

“You stole from a child,” Hannah whispered.

Gavin stepped toward her.

“She’s my daughter. That money was under my authority.”

Taylor heard that sentence from the doorway.

Authority.
