Chapter 12 - My phone recording

At my hotel that night, I remembered the old phone.

Still recording.

Four hours of fabric noise, car sounds, and then the engagement party.

Denise advised me not to send it to anyone casually.

So I didn’t.

We made a copy.

Preserved the original.

My conversation with Vanessa occurred in Tennessee, where one-party consent generally allowed a participant to record a conversation she was part of, according to the attorney we consulted.

I am not giving legal advice.

That was our situation.

The outdoor party recording captured voices nearby.

Its usefulness varied depending on expectation and context.

Most important:

The recording was not necessary to prove Vanessa sprayed me.

Thirty witnesses existed.

Several guests had filmed parts.

The recording did capture George saying:

“Search her bag first.”

And Vanessa:

“Beggars have no place at weddings here.”

And:

“Touch her and you’re fired.”

The worst thing about listening was hearing laughter.

I recognized some voices later.

One woman apologized.

Two did not.

I stopped caring.

My recording had a more important section.

Before Ethan emerged, after Patricia ordered me removed, George leaned toward Vanessa.

Low voice.

“Get the packet before Ethan sees her.”

The phone caught it.

Faint.

Clear enough after normal playback.

No forensic magic.

Packet.

He knew what was in my bag.

Not exactly.

But enough.

That changed the business dispute from:

Unfortunate party misunderstanding

to:

Why was George trying to retrieve documents he had sent me?
