Chapter 17 - Caleb kept his job
Caleb did not become the hero who inherited a company because he offered an old woman a hand.
He was a server.
Twenty-two.
Community-college student.
Working weekend events through BrightHouse.
Vanessa could not fire him.
George could request that the agency not send him back to the Mitchell property.
They did.
BrightHouse reassigned him.
No lost job.
When investigators later asked for witnesses regarding the hose incident, Caleb gave a statement.
Simple.
Margaret approached.
Said she was Ethan’s guest.
Vanessa confronted her.
Margaret did not threaten anyone.
Vanessa told her to leave.
Margaret refused.
Vanessa sprayed her.
Patricia ordered removal.
George told them to search the bag.
Caleb tried to help.
Vanessa threatened his job.
Then Ethan emerged.
Caleb also remembered something from earlier.
At around four-thirty, before I arrived, George told event staff:
“If an older woman named Margaret shows up carrying documents, send her to me before she gets to Ethan.”
That changed things.
George knew I might come.
Why did Vanessa still act as though I were simply a random beggar?
Maybe George had not told her.
Maybe she panicked.
Maybe she recognized the possibility and rejected it because accepting it would require stopping.
