Chapter 2 - Ethan crossed the lawn

The entire party changed at one word.

Not because everyone suddenly developed compassion.

Because hierarchy had been corrected.

Thirty seconds earlier I was an old woman on the grass.

Now I was connected to the man whose engagement they were celebrating.

People straightened.

People stopped smiling.

The transformation disgusted me.

Ethan handed his champagne glass to nobody in particular and crossed the lawn so quickly that two guests stepped aside.

“Mom.”

He dropped beside me.

His trousers went directly into the wet grass.

He did not care.

“What happened?”

I looked at him.

Up close, I could see genuine confusion.

Not performance.

“Ask Vanessa.”

He looked toward her.

Vanessa’s face was blank.

“Ethan, I didn’t know.”

He looked at the hose.

Then my soaked clothes.

“What didn’t you know?”

“That it was her.”

The sentence traveled across the lawn more clearly than a confession.

Not:

I didn’t mean to spray anyone.

Not:

The hose slipped.

Not:

She threatened me.

That it was her.

Ethan stared.

I felt his hand touch my elbow.

“Can you stand?”

“Yes.”

I started to rise.

Pain shot through my knee.

I stopped.

The young server stepped closer again.

This time Ethan said:

“Help me.”

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Ethan turned.

“If you say one word about firing him, Vanessa, I swear—”

He stopped himself.

Good.

The server and Ethan helped me stand.

Patricia approached.

“There has been an unfortunate misunderstanding.”

I laughed.

Water ran from my chin.

“Which part?”

Patricia’s jaw tightened.

George said:

“She entered private property under questionable circumstances.”

Ethan looked at him.

“She’s my mother.”

“Yes, we understand that now.”

“Now?”

George did not answer.

Vanessa said:

“She wasn’t on the list.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Why?”

Silence.

Then:

“She told me she wasn’t coming.”

I stared at Ethan.

“What?”

He turned toward me.

“You told Vanessa you didn’t want to come.”

“No.”

Vanessa said quickly:

“You said these events made you uncomfortable.”

“I said I didn’t own a formal gown.”

“You said you didn’t want to embarrass Ethan.”

“No.”

That time my voice sharpened.

“I said I was worried you were embarrassed by me.”

Ethan slowly turned back toward her.

Nobody spoke.

Then George said:

“This is not the place.”

I looked at him.

“You were just about to search my bag.”

His expression changed.

Good.

My phone was still recording.

Ethan noticed the tote pressed against me.

“What’s in there?”

I looked at my son.

“Something I came to show you.”

George stepped forward.

“Ethan, before anyone starts throwing accusations around—”

“No.”

My son’s voice was quiet.

Everyone heard it.

He looked at the young server.

“What’s your name?”

“Caleb, sir.”

“Caleb, can you get my mother a towel?”

“Yes.”

“Not from anyone standing here.”

Caleb almost smiled.

Then hurried toward the mansion.

Vanessa whispered:

“Ethan.”

He did not look at her.

He looked at me.

May you like

“Mom, why are you here?”

That was when I realized how much had been kept from both of us.
