Chapter 19 - Ethan ends the engagement
Not that night.
I insisted on that detail whenever people retold the story.
Ethan did not rip off a ring beside my wet clothes and announce revenge.
He left.
Sobered up.
Slept badly.
Met Vanessa twice with attorneys and once with a couples counselor.
For three weeks the engagement remained technically intact.
I hated that.
Then realized:
It was not my decision.
If I demanded he end it to prove loyalty, I would be using the same control I condemned.
So when he asked:
“What do you think I should do?”
I said:
“I think you know what I think.”
He laughed sadly.
“Mom.”
“No.”
“I need help.”
“You need a decision.”
Different.
He eventually ended the engagement after Vanessa said something during counseling he could not accept.
The counselor asked:
“What would you do differently if Margaret appeared at another private event after being told to leave?”
Vanessa answered:
“I would make sure Ethan handled her before it became public.”
Ethan said:
“That’s the problem.”
Vanessa argued she meant communication.
He heard management.
Their relationship ended four days later.
No screaming.
No ring thrown into a fountain.
