part 3

PART 3
The morning had begun with orange juice and humiliation.
Ava came downstairs wearing a cream blouse and black skirt, her hair still damp from the shower.
She expected awkward newlywed breakfast.
Instead, she found Daniel’s family seated like judges.
Margaret at the head of the table.
Daniel beside her.
Vanessa barefoot in silk pajamas.
Daniel’s father, Richard, behind a newspaper he was not reading.
Two cousins pretending to scroll their phones.
The plates were already dirty.
Eggs.
Toast.
Coffee cups.
Silverware scattered across linen.
Ava looked toward the kitchen.
No staff.
Margaret smiled.
“We sent the housekeeper away for the morning.”
Ava understood immediately.
This was a test.
Vanessa stretched lazily.
“Mom says brides should learn the rhythm of the house.”
Ava looked at Daniel.
He avoided her eyes.
That hurt more than the insult.
She had married him two days earlier under white roses and soft vows.
He had promised partnership.
Respect.
Protection.
Now he sat silent while his sister treated her like hired help.
Ava picked up her own cup and carried it to the sink.
Then she turned to Vanessa.
“You can bring your dishes in too.”
Vanessa laughed.
“Excuse me?”
“You are an adult.”
The room went cold.
Margaret set down her fork.
“Careful, Ava.”
Daniel stood.
Ava looked at him.
“Daniel, tell your sister to clean up after herself.”
His face hardened.
“You do not speak to my family that way.”
Ava’s voice stayed calm.
“I spoke to your sister like a person with hands.”
Vanessa gasped.
Margaret’s eyes flashed.
Daniel crossed the room fast.
Too fast.
Ava saw the slap coming a heartbeat before it landed.
Her cheek exploded with heat.
Her body twisted.
She fell beside the coffee table.
Someone inhaled sharply.
No one helped her.
Daniel stood over her, shocked by his own hand but not sorry enough to lower it.
“How dare you order my sister around?”
That was when Ava stopped being a new bride.
She became the legal owner of the house.
The investor.
The woman with the emergency authority.
She touched her cheek.
Then looked up at the man who had just broken every condition protecting his family’s access to her property.

“Touch me again,” she said, “and this marriage ends today.”
