PART 5

Daniel tried charm next.

It was almost insulting.

His hand, the same hand that had struck her, lowered slowly.

“Ava.”

His voice softened.

“This got out of control.”

Ava stared at him.

“You hit me.”

His eyes flicked toward the security guard.

“I reacted.”

Margaret jumped in.

“It was a family disagreement.”

Evelyn’s voice sharpened through the phone.

“Physical assault on the trust beneficiary inside a protected estate is not a family disagreement.”

Vanessa began crying.

Not for Ava.

For herself.

“Are we being kicked out?”

Nobody answered.

That was answer enough.

Richard sank back into his chair like his bones had failed.

Daniel turned on his father.

“You knew?”

Richard rubbed his face.

“I knew the debt was bought.”

“By who?”

Richard looked at Ava.

Daniel’s face twisted.

“You let me marry her without telling me?”

Margaret snapped, “Do not blame your father.”

Ava almost laughed.

There it was.

The Cole family disease.

Responsibility always belonged to someone else.

The front gate intercom chimed.

Vale security had arrived.

Then estate counsel.

Then a local officer called by Evelyn after reviewing the live audio.

Margaret turned toward the camera again.

“You recorded us?”

Ava touched her cheek.

“You performed in front of my security system.”

The officer entered with careful professionalism.

He looked at Ava first.

“Ms. Vale, do you need medical attention?”

Daniel looked offended.

“She is fine.”

The officer did not look at him.

Ava answered, “I need documentation.”

The officer nodded.

Daniel’s face changed when he realized she was not asking permission to accuse him.

She was preserving evidence.

Evelyn’s voice continued from the phone.

“Ms. Vale, do you authorize formal suspension of the Cole family access pending trust review?”

Every Cole in the room looked at Ava.

Margaret’s expression turned pleading for the first time.

“Ava, do not do this.”

Ava looked at the dirty breakfast plates.

At Vanessa’s untouched hands.

At Daniel’s raised voice still echoing in her bones.

At the family who had staged a test and failed harder than they understood.

“I authorize it.”

Evelyn answered, “Confirmed.”

Outside, gate codes changed.
