PART 7

Daniel followed Ava into the library while everyone argued in the living room.

Security stayed at the open door.

Not close enough to listen.

Close enough to stop him.

The library had been Daniel’s favorite room.

Dark shelves.

Leather chairs.

A portrait of his grandfather above the fireplace.

He used to say the room proved the Cole family had history.

Ava now knew history was not the same as ownership.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I did not know.”

Ava turned.

“About the house?”

“About all of it.”

“You knew enough to stand over me.”

His face tightened.

“I should not have hit you.”

“No.”

“You should not have wanted to.”

That landed.

Daniel looked younger suddenly.

Not innocent.

Just exposed.

“My mother said you needed to learn boundaries.”

Ava almost smiled.

“Your mother meant hierarchy.”

“She thought you were disrespecting Vanessa.”

“Vanessa is twenty-eight.”

“She can wash a plate.”

Daniel rubbed his jaw.

The charm was gone.

So was the rage.

What remained was panic.

“If this goes public, my family is finished.”

Ava stared at him.

“That is your concern?”

“I am saying we can fix this privately.”

“You mean quietly.”

He did not answer.

Ava walked toward the fireplace and looked at the portrait.

“Your family taught you that silence protects reputation.”

“My father taught me silence protects abusers.”

Daniel flinched.

“I am not an abuser.”

Ava turned back.

“You became one the moment your hand decided I was easier to hit than contradict.”

The words filled the library.

Daniel looked toward the floor.

For one second, Ava saw the man she had hoped he was.

Then he spoke.

“What do you want?”

Not are you okay.

Not how do I repair this.

What do you want.

A negotiation.

Ava felt the last thread snap.

“I want an annulment review.”

His head lifted.

“Ava.”

“I want you out of my bedroom today.”

“Ava, please.”

“I want your family’s appeal handled by counsel.”

“And I want you to stop calling my mercy a marriage.”

Daniel went pale.

“You would end us over one mistake?”

Ava touched her bruised cheek.

“No.”

May you like

“I am ending us because you still think the slap is the only thing you did.”
