Margaret understood before Daniel did.
That was why she went for the cameras.
Not Ava.
Not the cheek.
Not the marriage.
The cameras.
“Those cameras belong to us,” Margaret snapped.
It was the first honest fear she had shown all morning.
Ava stood slowly.
Her knees shook once, but her voice did not.
“No.”
“They belong to me.”
Daniel laughed.
“You are delusional.”
Ava looked at him.
“Am I?”
She pressed the emergency command on her phone.
The Vale Holdings security app opened.
Three icons turned red.
Estate access locked.
Financial accounts frozen.
Occupancy review initiated.
The phone rang on speaker.
Evelyn Park answered with the calm precision of a woman who had been waiting for this call.
“All accounts are frozen, Ms. Vale.”
Margaret’s face turned white.
Richard lowered his newspaper.
Vanessa whispered, “Mom?”
Daniel stared at Ava’s phone.
“What accounts?”
Evelyn continued.
“Security footage preserved.”
“Gate access revoked for non-authorized users pending review.”
“Estate counsel and private security are en route.”
Daniel grabbed for the phone.
Ava stepped back.
“Try it.”
He stopped.
Because the security officer stationed outside the living room had already entered.
Not one of Margaret’s old staff.
Vale security.
Tall.
Quiet.
Watching Daniel’s hands.
Margaret forced a brittle laugh.
“This is absurd.”
Ava turned to her.
“What part?”
“The cameras?”
“The accounts?”
“The deed?”
The word deed made Richard stand.
He finally looked afraid.
Daniel noticed.
“Dad?”
Richard said nothing.
Ava looked at him and almost pitied him.
Almost.
He had known more than his son.
Maybe not everything.
Enough.
Margaret recovered with venom.
“You married into this family.”
Ava answered, “No.”
“I allowed this family to remain in my house.”
Vanessa gripped the back of a chair.
“What does that mean?”
Evelyn’s voice came through the phone.
“It means Cole House is owned by Vale Holdings and held under Ava Vale’s personal trust.”
“Your family occupies the residence through a conditional use agreement.”
Daniel’s lips parted.
