PART 8

Margaret did not appeal with humility.

She appealed with threats.

By noon, she had called three lawyers, two society friends, one retired judge, and a gossip columnist who owed her a favor.

By three, Evelyn had frozen every nonessential estate account.

By four, Helen had sent formal notice that public defamation would terminate all remaining occupancy rights.

Margaret stopped calling reporters after that.

Vanessa stayed in her room until dinner.

Then she came downstairs without makeup, eyes swollen.

Ava was in the breakfast room signing documents.

Not because she had forgiven the space.

Because fear had no right to decide where she sat.

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

“I’m sorry.”

Ava did not look up immediately.

“For what?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“For laughing.”

“And?”

“For letting him hit you.”

“And?”

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“For thinking you were here to serve us.”

Ava set down the pen.

That last sentence mattered most.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“I didn’t know you owned the house.”

Ava looked at her.

“That should not be why you are sorry.”

Vanessa’s face crumpled.

“I know.”

For the first time all day, Ava believed someone in the house might be capable of learning.

Not enough to change the outcome.

Enough to make the truth cleaner.

Richard submitted the first honest statement that evening.

He admitted the debt.

The default.

The conditional agreement.

Margaret’s knowledge.

Daniel’s ignorance of the full structure.

He also admitted that Margaret had planned the breakfast “tradition” to establish Ava’s place in the family.

Evelyn read the statement over video call.

“That helps.”

Ava asked, “Me or them?”

“Truth helps you.”

Ava nodded.

That night, Daniel moved into the guest wing under security supervision.

Ava locked the primary suite.

The bed still had rose petals from their wedding night.

She stripped them off herself.

One handful at a time.

Petals fell into the trash like pieces of a lie.

Then she washed her face carefully, avoiding the bruise.

In the mirror, she saw a woman with a swollen cheek, red eyes, and a steadier spine than she had yesterday.

Her phone buzzed.

Evelyn.

The annulment petition is ready.

Ava replied with one word.
