They had not planned to watch Emma’s graduation.
That was the truth none of them wanted to say.
Linda had said she was too emotionally exhausted.
Tyler had a basketball banquet.
Richard said Emma would understand.
“She’s independent,” he told everyone. “She likes doing things her own way.”
But Emma had asked them to come.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
She had left three tickets on the kitchen counter beside a note written in her careful handwriting.
Ceremony at four. I know Tyler has the banquet later, but maybe you can make both. It would mean a lot.
Richard read it, folded it, and placed it under a stack of mail.
At four o’clock, Emma walked across the stage without them.
At six, Tyler stood in the living room wearing his red basketball uniform while Richard clapped him on the shoulder and told him he was the future of the family.
Linda posted photos of Tyler with heart emojis.
No one posted Emma.
Hours later, someone sent Tyler a link.
Then another.
Then his phone started vibrating nonstop.
Emma’s speech had gone viral.
That was the only reason they turned on the television.
Not pride.
