Chapter 9

For the first time, Linda looked around the living room as if seeing it from Emma’s point of view.

Tyler’s trophies on the shelf.

Framed basketball photos.

Team banners.

Signed jerseys.

On the side table, one small photo of Emma from sophomore year sat half-hidden behind a lamp.

No graduation portrait.

No valedictorian certificate framed.

No college acceptance letters displayed.

Linda had told herself Emma did not care about attention.

Maybe that was only because Emma had stopped asking for it.

On the television, Emma smiled politely while Daniel Pierce shook hands with the dean.

Her smile did not reach her eyes.

Linda covered her mouth again.

“What have we done?”

Richard snapped, “We didn’t know this would happen.”

Tyler looked at him.

“That’s the problem.”

Richard turned.

Tyler stepped back but did not apologize.

“You only care because Daniel Pierce saw it.”

The words struck the room hard.

Linda stared at Richard.

Richard stared at the television.

No one denied it.

Outside the living room windows, late-night darkness pressed against the bright suburban home.

Inside, Emma’s voice still seemed to linger.
