Chapter 3

Richard had spent six years trying to get near Daniel Pierce.

Six years of charity lunches.

Networking receptions.

Foundation letters.

Donation proposals.

Business pitches disguised as philanthropy.

Daniel Pierce was not just wealthy.

He was selective.

His foundation funded hospitals, universities, medical research, and education programs that could transform entire careers overnight.

Richard wanted access.

He talked about Daniel like a locked door he deserved to open.

“He respects excellence,” Richard often said at dinner.

Emma once asked, “What kind of excellence?”

Richard barely looked up.

“The kind adults build.”

Tyler laughed then.

Linda told Emma not to be sensitive.

Emma went back to her homework.

That was the pattern in the Whitaker home.

Tyler’s wins were family victories.

Emma’s wins were expected maintenance.

Straight A’s.

Scholarships.

Debate awards.

Volunteer hours.

Valedictorian.

All treated like natural weather.

Something that happened because Emma was Emma.

Not because she worked until two in the morning while the rest of the house slept.

Now Daniel Pierce was on television with his hand near Emma’s shoulder, publicly honoring her.

And Richard looked terrified because the powerful man he had chased had chosen the daughter he dismissed.
