Chapter 6

Daniel Pierce’s voice filled the living room.

“Emma, the Pierce Foundation is honored to fund your future.”

Richard stopped breathing for half a second.

Fund your future.

The words were too broad.

Too dangerous.

Too public.

The full scholarship package was not revealed.

No details appeared on-screen.

No documents were shown.

But Richard understood enough.

Daniel Pierce had not merely congratulated Emma.

He had attached his name to her.

In Richard’s world, that mattered more than money.

It meant protection.

Mentorship.

Access.

A door opened.

Not for Richard.

For Emma.

Linda whispered, “What does that mean?”

Richard did not answer.

He was staring at Daniel’s face on the television, searching for the reason.

Why Emma?

Why his daughter?

Why now?

Tyler’s phone buzzed again.

He looked at it, swallowed, and said, “People are saying she gave the best speech of the year.”

Richard turned on him.

“Stop reading it.”

Tyler lowered the phone slowly.

But the damage was done.

The world had seen Emma.

And unlike her family, the world had applauded.
