Chapter 4

Linda’s tears did not begin with guilt.

They began with shock.

She had convinced herself Emma was strong enough not to need them.

That was how she survived the choice.

Emma understood.

Emma was mature.

Emma never made a fuss.

Emma would be fine.

Mothers lie to themselves gently when the truth is too ugly.

But the television did not show fine.

It showed Emma standing alone beneath graduation lights, surrounded by cheering strangers, thanking a billionaire for showing up when her own family did not.

Linda pressed both hands to her mouth.

“Oh my God,” she whispered.

Richard snapped, “Don’t start.”

Linda looked at him.

“She said it on camera.”

“She shouldn’t have.”

That sentence made Tyler look up sharply.

For the first time that night, he seemed less like the favored son and more like a witness.

“Dad,” he said, “people are reposting it everywhere.”

Richard’s face hardened.

“She embarrassed this family.”

On television, Emma accepted the white roses from Daniel Pierce.

She looked composed.

Not cruel.

Not vindictive.

Just honest.

That was what made it unbearable.

She had not shouted.

She had not accused.

May you like

She had simply told the truth in front of the world.
