Chapter 5

Tyler had always been the center of the house without asking to be.

At first, Emma did not blame him.

He was younger.

Loud.

Athletic.

Easy for Richard to understand.

Games had scores.

Trophies had shine.

Coaches called.

Parents cheered.

Emma’s victories came in envelopes, emails, certificates, and quiet announcements at school assemblies no one attended.

When Tyler made varsity, Richard bought a new camera.

When Emma became valedictorian, he said, “Good. That helps college applications.”

When Tyler twisted his ankle, Linda stayed home with him all day.

When Emma had the flu during finals week, Linda left soup outside her door.

Tyler noticed more than they thought.

He enjoyed the attention, but not always the unfairness.

That night, watching Emma’s graduation speech on television, his face shifted from embarrassment to shame.

He looked at his red uniform.

Then at Emma’s blue gown on-screen.

Millions of people had seen her.

Not as the background sister.

Not as the responsible one.

As someone chosen.

Recognized.

Honored.

And Tyler understood something his parents still resisted.

Emma had not taken anything from him.

May you like

They had taken themselves from her.
